In the U.S. alone one estimate suggests 500 million straw are used every single day. One study published earlier this year estimated as many as 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the worlds beaches. Eight million tons of plastic flow into the ocean every year, and straws comprise just 0.025 percent of that. Plastic straws cause pollution and damage to the environment during its entire lifespan. Reusable stainless steel straws are such an alternative. They are much better than plastics, for more than just the reason of benefiting the environment. In the ocean, plastic debris injures and kills fish, seabirds ad marine mammals. Because persistent organic pollutants in the marine environment attach to the surface of plastic debris, floating plastics in the oceans have been found to accumulate pollutants and transport them through ocean currents.
