Why You Should Eat Healthy

Let’s just be honest not very many of us have great diet and eating routine. We also don’t think it’s necessary. I’m here to tell you that these things are necessary. Good nutrition can lower health risks, help lose weight, or maintain a healthy weight, give you more consistent energy, and make you feel better as a whole.

Bad nutrition can lead to illness, some being; heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. With that being said, what can eating certain foods do for you? The Mediterranean diet includes a lot more fruits and vegetables, inserting herbs for salt, eating more fish and less red meat. According to the Mayo Clinic this diet has reduced heart problems, some types of cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s. A newer diet called Flexitarean is based off the vegetarian but it is flexible. You can have meats from time to time but in moderation. This has had the same benefits as other diets. Compared to meat eaters, vegans weigh less, have lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Vegans have a 30% lower risk of heart disease and a lower risk of cancer. These are just a few of the most popular diet plans.

There are more benefits other than lowered risk of certain diseases, you can have stronger bones and teeth. It might also lead to better sleeping at night, and who doesn’t want that? Too much sugar can lead to midnight wake-ups. B vitamins help regulate melatonin, a hormone that regulates your sleep cycles.

How about mental health? Well a good diet paired with exercise will boost your self-esteem. As far as processed foods go we should try to stay away from those as well. Highly processed foods can lead to inflammation, which leads to depression. Also a group of young adults followed the Mediterranean diet for three weeks and symptoms of depression dropped significantly.

One downside of eating healthy is that it might be more expensive. Studies have been done and it is about $1.50 more per day, but, and this is a big but, if you don’t get those Hot Cheetos out of the vending machine twice a day then the cost will be fine.

With all that being said no one can make you eat healthy and it is ultimately your decision, but why would you not try to do at least a little better for yourself. You deserve it, so let’s put the chips down and pick the spinach up!!!
